Bucket list Petra! Indiana Jones’en, 10 miles hiked, no horses or holy grail
Dating to around 300 B.C., Petra was the capital of the Nabatean Kingdom. Accessed via a narrow canyon called Al Siq, it contains tombs and temples carved into pink sandstone cliffs, earning its nickname, the "Rose City”
Exiting the Canyon and seeing the Treasury for the first time was really a wow moment
Called the Treasury the structure was really the tomb for the kings.
The amphitheater held 3000 people, mainly used for town meetings, not entertainment
Beginning of the stairway up the mountain to the temple complex
Lots of vendors all the way up to the top of the mountain
Sarah, pictured here, tried very hard to get me to buy something
You can see the tombs at the bottom of this picture where we started our way up. From the entrance of Petra to the tombs was about a 2 mile walk altogether.
Our reward at the top of the mountain is this huge monastery, the largest building in Petra
Musical instrument made from wood and goat skin
Hoppy-sized treasury building
The city is one of the New 7 Wonders of the World and a UNESCO World Heritage Site
